Happy birthday, my sweet daughter

Happy birthday, Emmy!

You have officially left your teens behind.  You are a twenty-something woman now.  How quickly that happened.

You have embraced your life with a passion and zeal and sense of humor that leaves me breathless.  You have a way of looking at the world, of absorbing learning, of seeking the truth and fairness in every situation that is humbling.  You are truly a citizen of the current world.

You are a sensitive and caring being who nurtures people and animals, who sees the best in everything and who values our mother Earth and her resources.  You seek understanding and common ground with all people.  You are wise in diverse cultures, language and beliefs.

Yet, you are still my little girl.  You are goofy, clumsy, and moody.  You seek out reassurance and cuddles.  You know you have your daddy wrapped around your little finger and you shamelessly exploit that fact.  (True, he is a willing coconspirator.) Just last week, you and I sat on the living room floor sorting doll clothes, giggling and remembering.  You come home from college, make a mess in the kitchen and hurry off.  You are the one member of the family who unapologetically flops down in my favorite chair to study or watch t.v.  It is your due, you are the baby.  And I love it.  It is all a reflection of the security you feel in this family, in our love.

Your brothers, your father and I are enriched by your presence in our lives.  You are a gift to our family that we get to open over and over and over again, every day.  You are a surprise and a delight.  We are glad you are here, we are glad you are ours.

Happy birthday, precious girl.

Love, Momma
